By road bike through the border triangle

Winding along the Moselle, up and down through the Eifel. In the border region of Germany, France and Luxembourg, the landscape is truly anything but monotonous! Idyllic river valleys - including the Kyll, Sauer and Alzette as well as the Moselle - meet green vineyards, dense forests meet spectacular cliffs and silted-up dry maars, the views extend as far as the Hunsrück heights.

The daily stages that you cover in this varied nature are wonderfully long and peppered with many a promising elevation gain. To ensure that you still have enough time to visit the most beautiful stage towns in addition to pedaling, double overnight stays are planned in Trier and Zell an der Mosel. But you should also take at least a short break in many other small towns along the way. We predict that you will find it hard to resist anyway. After all, the region's fine grape juice is tempting to taste in the pretty wine villages everywhere.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 8-day tour from Metz to Koblenz

Individual arrival into the capital of Lorraine located in northeast of France. Almost endless numbers of different sights wait to be explored. The bikes will be delivered the next morning to your hotel.

Your first cycling stage takes you via the small French town of Thionville to the border triangle of Germany, France and Luxembourg. The small municipality of Schengen became famous thanks to the Schengen Agreement. In Perl, you can visit the Roman Villa Borg.

In Remich, you leave the Moselle and cycle through beautiful landscapes with small villages. The course of the Alzette river will lead you easily into the hustle and bustle of Luxembourg City.

Take some time to visit the European Capital of Culture 2007. Nowhere else do contemporary buildings harmonize so subtly with the ruins of former castles and palaces. Luxembourg City has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for many years.

Today you will spend your day on the so-called “Echternach cycle path”. The landscape will quickly change after you leave the capital. It is characterized by spectacular rock crevices, magnificent waterfalls and dense forests. All this characterizes the “Little Luxembourgish Switzerland”. Echternach is an excellent place to stop for lunch. The capital of the region has managed to retain a certain medieval flair. Plan enough time to visit the abbey and the Roman villa. Or simply stroll through the narrow alleyways and along the city walls.
You will be accompanied by wonderful vineyard landscapes and views as you continue along the Sauertal cycle path. The route runs along a former railroad line and mostly follows the course of the river. At Wasserbillig, you will meet up with an old friend: The Moselle leads you via Konz, where the Saar flows into the Moselle, to your destination for today's stage in Trier.

In Trier, you can experience and comprehend 2000 years of history up close. Plan some time to visit the famous amphitheater and the Porta Nigra.

The Moselle will show you the way out of the city. But turn off at Ehrang and follow the Kyll, the longest river in the Eifel. Magnificent panoramas and breathtaking natural landscapes await you along the way. In Bitburg, a strong beer will reward you for your efforts. The reservoir near Biersdorf is very attractive. It is considered the tourist center of the southern Eifel and offers numerous leisure activities. In Irrel, you should plan time to visit the Irrel waterfalls. These are rapids in the lower reaches of the Prüm.

For the last stretch, follow the Sûre and Moselle back to Trier. Take the time again to enjoy the numerous monuments at your leisure. Or simply treat yourself to a good glass of wine.

Before starting the bike tour, you should schedule some time to visit the well-known amphitheater as well as the Porta Nigra. Here you can experience and comprehend 2000 years of history. You start your trip and cycle alongside the wonderful Moselle River. An educational trail along your route reports on domestic grape variety.

Soon you reach Piesport, where you can view the Roman cellars from the 3rd century. Make a further stop in Neumagen-Dhron, Germany´s oldest wine village, or in Bernkastel-Kues with its famous wine "Bernkasteler Doctor". Only a short cycling distance separates you from Zeltingen.

You cycle through the winegrowing region "Kröver Nacktarsch" until you reach Traben-Trarbach. Many vineyards accompany you on both sides of the river. Traben-Trarbach offers many architectural masterpieces of art nouveau and Belle Epoque. Your route takes you through the wine region "Zeller Schwarze Katz" and finally ends in Zell.

A day in the Volcanic Eifel awaits you today. It will be a little more sporty. During your cycle tour, you will pass silted-up dry maars, idyllic villages and numerous meadows and forests.

There are always a few climbs to contend with, but the fantastic views as far as the Hunsrück heights will make up for it. A short stopover in the spa town of Bad Bertrich provides relaxation before you cycle the last few kilometers back to the Moselle.

Early you arrive in Beilstein, widely known as "Rothenburg on the Moselle River". Cochem is worth seeing, for example the charming center as well as the Reichsburg castle from the 11th century. After a short cycling distance, you reach Treis-Karden where you also have the possibility for a wine tasting.

After about 5 kilometers you should make a side trip to the medieval castle "Burg Eltz", which counts among the most beautiful and best-preserved castles of Germany. Located in the heart of nature it offers magnificent views. Back to the Moselle bike path you pass numerous charming wine villages, before you reach your final destination Koblenz. The center is situated at the confluence of the Moselle River and the Rhine River and is extremely well-suited for a walking tour.

In Koblenz there is much to discover. If you are interested in, we would be pleased to book some extra nights for you. Our transfer from Koblenz to Trier is very comfortable (daily possible, departure: directly from the hotel, reservation required at time of booking).

You will navigate using GPS data. You therefore need your own GPS device and/or the free, user-friendly PEDALO app.

You will also receive daily map sheets from us with elevation profiles and basic information about the route, which you can use to get a general overview.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!
