From Gentian to Riesling Wine

The morning of a cycle holiday on the Mur Cycle Path begins with a look out of your hotel window. What do you see? Green hills and forests, for which Styria is famous, and small charming Austrian towns and villages.

A little further along the route you meet the Mur every day and it accompanies you to Bad Radkersburg. The special thing about it: you’re always travelling a little downhill on the Mur!

The Austrian part of the Mur Cycle Path is 330 kilometres long and begins in St Michael in Lungau in Salzburg. On the seventh day of your cycling holiday you can watch the landscape change – from the mountainous Lungau to the lush green hills of Styria.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 8-day tour from St. Michael to Bad Radkersburg

Your starting point for the “Tour de Mur” is surrounded by idyllic mountain scenery.

First, you will cycle to Tamsweg with its historic market place, pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard. This region is characterised by wood in all its diversity. For example visit the wood museum St. Ruprecht.

Today’s destination is the tranquil town Murau, a medieval beer brewing town with a beer museum, the castle Murau and a beautiful centre.

The passages of the Mur Valley at the foot of the Niedere Tauern lead you to Frojach with its narrow-gauge railway museum; to the legendary ruins in Frauenburg and to the oldest mineral water spring in Styria in Sauerbrunn.

Many historic sites can also be seen in Judenburg: the city tower, the former sovereign’s castle, town houses and Magdalen Church.

The Maria Buch pilgrimage church and Seckau Abbey (Benedictine abbey) are worth seeing along the way.In the old industrial towns, one can clearly see how successful the locals dealt with their past when watching their architectural sites: Well-kept old towns, vibrant pedestrian zones, and interesting museums.

In Leoben you can visit the monastery Göss and the Gösser brewery. In Bruck an der Mur you will find interesting sites such as the Schlossberg hill, the Kornmesserhaus, and the city hall which are worth visiting.

First, you will cycle to Frohnleiten with its Murlendpark, and the “Tratschweiberbrunnen” fountain. Then, you will find pure nature along the way: old farmhouses and orchards and high cliffs. You will come across Rabenstein castle, the Lurgrotte caves and the open-air museum Stübing.

The capital city of Styria, Graz, has lots of points of interest to offer: the Schlossberg hill with its clock tower, Eggenberg castle, the country house and the town hall, countless museums and great restaurants.

The narrowness of the Mur valley is over. The Grazer Feld and, further south, the Leibnitzer Feld spread out and lead you to the southern border of Styria. Seggau Castle near Leibnitz is certainly one of the most impressive sights in the country. In addition to the royal rooms and picture gallery, there is also a 300-year-old wine cellar to visit.

Only a few more kilometers separate you from today's stage destination. Worth seeing in Leibnitz: the Frauenberg Temple Museum and the Flavia Solva Roman Museum.

Water of all kinds on the final stage: the Mur as a guideline, the Röcksee as a bathing lake, the Peterquelle as mineral water and the thermal springs in Bad Radkersburg (historic old town with many styles!).

Departure or extension? Your cycle tour along the Mur Cycle Path is already over. Take the opportunity to extend your stay in the Styrian thermal spa region.

Occasional cyclists

You prefer flat terrain, but you won’t be put off by the occasional hill. There has to be the right mix of breaks, nature and culture. You enjoy exercise and bring some stamina and cycling experience to the table.

Topography

The Mur cycle path is a little hilly at the start. For the rest of the way, however, the route runs gently downhill along the Mur. There are some small climbs to overcome when the cycle path leaves the course of the Mur for a short time.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
