Trading towns, dreamlike harbors and the peaceful sea

Once the Dutch separated the frequently wild Zuidersee with a dam from the North Sea. This is how they have created the IJsselmeer. It is a peaceful water and it's beautiful: a paradise for sailors, kite- and windsurfers, which still appears with the charm of the sea. The mostly flat region is not least a paradise for cyclists. The optional seven or eight-day round trip takes you through national parks with some rare animals and plants, through picturesque fishing villages and cities, which have experienced splendid times as commercial metropolises. Amsterdam is one of your destinations on the longer journey. Here you can see too that special mixture of fascinating culture and the charm of the water that characterizes the landscape around the IJsselmeer. Enjoy best conditions for a fantastic cycling holiday.

For your 6-day round trip in the Harderwijk area

Individual arrival in Harderwijk. Your rental bikes (if booked) are in the hotel garage. Discover the medieval Hanseatic city. A walk through the city leads you almost always past the Church of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk). It is a basilica with a three-part elevation from the 14th and 15th century. You stay one night in Harderwijk.

Look forward to the Arkemheen-Eemland National Park and the wide, flat landscape with its extraordinary vegetation. Black-tailed godwits strut across the moor. You cycle alongside the banks of the Randmeren to Huizen, the twin village on the Eemmeer with costumes and fishing museum. Naarden is a beautiful city in the green Gooi region and one of the best-preserved fortress cities in Europe. It was one of the most important defenses of the New Dutch Waterline, which still amazes people today. On your way, you reach the medieval moated castle "Muidenschloss". Your tour leads you to Amsterdam. Enjoy the historic buildings, the magnificent museums and the cozy atmosphere. Take a tour on the canals, walk through the Vondelpark, visit the floating flower market and shop in the old city center. Amsterdam is really unique! Due to the short stage you have enough time to explore the beautiful city.

After a few kilometers you reach the typical old Dutch town of Monnickendam, a real water city. Enjoy a relaxing bike ride alongside the IJsselmeer to Volendam or Katwoude. Enjoy your breaks in traditional fishing villages, which have a past as thriving commercial cities. Volendam is famous for its costumes and is said to be home of a delicious smoked eel. In Edam, you will soon discover that the town has more to give than the world-famous cheese. Hoorn is a small shopper's paradise with numerous terrace cafes and restaurants to enjoy and rest. The picturesque town of Enkhuizen attracts thousands of tourists every year. Some love it because of its many historic buildings and monuments, others because of its harbor and the optimal water sports facilities. Take a city walk to visit the Zuiderzeemuseum with its replicated old Zuiderzee town.

On a ferry (not incl.) you cross the waves of the IJsselmeer before you disembark in Stavoren. Discover the nostalgic charm of the oldest of the eleven Frisian cities in the Netherlands. You cycle through the gently sloping and wooded Gaasterland with its cliffs to Lemmer. The cozy center with its many terraces right on the water, the cafes and the many attractions, such as the old lock represent the zest for life in the town. Afterwards you cycle alongside different lakes and canals to the national park "De Weerribben". Not only canoeists love this bog area, which is home of rare plants and animals - due to the variety of canals. One of the jewels of the place Blokzijl is the historic harbor area. It is not surprising that it is a protected heritage. Through the marshy area you cycle to Giethoorn.

Not so long ago, no cars but ships and punter boats transported people and goods in Giethoorn. Take a round trip with a "Punter" (punt) through this romantic village. After that you cycle alongside the national park "De Wieden". Zwartsluis (Black Lock) took over the role of the transit port for peat in the 18th century. Kampen has a tradition for centuries in the fields of trade and shipping and this is still evident today. Alongside the dam you reach Elburg. You cycle alongside the Veluwemeer and come back to your starting point Harderwijk.

After breakfast, individual return or start of your prolongation.

Sporty tour + e-bike = more momentum and energy

You think adventure, calf workouts and e-bikes are mutually exclusive? Far from it, we say! Cycling with electric power can open up whole new worlds of cycling.

Concept

For cycling holiday connoisseurs who already appreciate the advantages of e-bikes and who would like to cover longer distances at a brisk pace, the combination of an e-bike & a sporty cycling tour offers a new adventure in the form of longer distances and more challenging terrain.

Even those who are not (yet) fit enough but are still craving a sporty PEDALO bike tour should go for it - and treat themselves to an e-bike for support. With a gentle push, it gets you right into the thick of it all!

Or are you travelling as a couple and your partner is always ahead of you? With an e-bike, you will be able to keep up easily.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
