Active towards the sun – the Drau Cycle Path is a real jewel among routes and, thanks to the Mediterranean influences of the various stage destinations, the perfect region to spend an active holiday. Along the river, past majestic palaces and castles as well as numerous taverns that invite you to rest. We continue through friendly villages and small towns that are kissed by the sun in the south of Austria.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 6-day tour from Lienz to Lake Klopein

Arrival in Lienz in Eastern Tyrol located at the confluence of the rivers Isel and Drau. With a total of two thousand sunshine hours annually it is Austria’s sunniest holiday region. The breathtaking panorama onto the Alps and the Lienz-Dolomites will excite you.

A train ride takes you comfortably from Lienz to San Candido. The river Drau is still a young river in this section, babbling and breaking her way through the narrow Pustertal-valley. Defiant fortresses, castels and palaces rise majestically above the valley and herald desires of the once rich and powerful. Modest Romanesque chapels, Gothic and Baroque churches, crucifixes and piety columns invite for a short break. Over a long distance the rugged, bizzare rockfaces of the Lienz-Dolomites tower over the landscape and hence turn today’s stage into an unforgettable experience.

From Lienz, the confluence of the rivers Isel and Drau, you again follow the river Drau now appearing in a shade of gray, by the locals called ”glacier milk”, which is due to very fine rock particles coming from the gigantic rocks. Along ancient Roman trade routes – past ruins, castles, little churches and wayside crosses – you cycle through the picturesque Oberdrautal-valley. En route you pass pretty villages such as Pirkach, Oberdrauburg and the first market town on Carinthian soil, Dellach. Cosy wine taverns, called ”Buschenschenken” await with proper farm food and invite you to take a break. Past time-honoured farm houses decorated with flowers the well-developed Drau cycle path takes you to Spittal an der Drau. The centre of Spittal features a main square, which you might call ”cute” and a particularly beautiful palace, which is considered one of the most impressive Renaissance building with the clearest style in all of Central Europe and is called ”Porcia” named after the previous owners.

Today you cycle through the ‚Cultural Promenade of Upper Carinthia‘. You leave the area of Spital along the river Drau and immerse yourself into an ancient cultural scenery, meadows and forests and idyllic wetland- areas. Past Kellerberg palace always along the river Drau you reach Villach. The heart of Villach features the pretty old part of town with its Italian flair and the cosy pubs and restaurants. The Drau-metropolis presents itself to visitors adequately as vivacious and oozing southern flair. Part of the charcter of the town is definitely the river Drau, meandering through Villach just like a blue ribbon. Further the tour leads you through the enchanting Rosental.-valley. The Karawanks-mountain range and the river Drau offer a more than impressive backdrop for an unforgettable day of cycling. Amazing conglomerate rocks flank the river and again and again offer fascinating views. On one of these rocks Hollenburg castle rises, the landmark of the Rosental-valley. If you fancy slightly extending the in comparison rather short tour, we recommend en route a detour to Velden or embark on a round trip to Lake Faaker See.

Along beautifully designed dam-paths the cycling tour leads you through meadows and fields and past little hamlets towards the giant Völkermarkter-reservoir. Now you bid farewell to your loyal companion the river Drau, so you get to enjoy Lake Klopeine with its marvellous location. Time to drink in the lakescape and leave all your cares behind.

Sporty tour + e-bike = more momentum and energy

You think adventure, calf workouts and e-bikes are mutually exclusive? Far from it, we say! Cycling with electric power can open up whole new worlds of cycling.

Concept

For cycling holiday connoisseurs who already appreciate the advantages of e-bikes and who would like to cover longer distances at a brisk pace, the combination of an e-bike & a sporty cycling tour offers a new adventure in the form of longer distances and more challenging terrain.

Even those who are not (yet) fit enough but are still craving a sporty PEDALO bike tour should go for it - and treat themselves to an e-bike for support. With a gentle push, it gets you right into the thick of it all!

Or are you travelling as a couple and your partner is always ahead of you? With an e-bike, you will be able to keep up easily.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
