Individual tour

Explore the paths along the blue Danube River just like the Romans, the legendary Nibelungs and even Europe’s powerful kings and emperors did before you. You will get to know the beauty and historical significance of this ancient military and trading route. Never far away from the cool, clear water of the Danube, you will enjoy one of Europe’s most beautiful and popular cycle routes.

Start your trip in Passau, the town of three rivers. You will cycle through various districts of Upper and Lower Austria and finally to the Danube metropolis of Vienna. You will love the breathtaking natural beauty of the Danube valley and the Schlögen bend or perhaps you will fall in love with the landscapes along the Danube River such as the Machland, the Strudengau or the famous Wachau.

In the rural areas, to accompany these wonderful impressions, you can enjoy many traditional Austrian delicacies: from savory dumpling specialties up to wines of the Buschenschenken taverns in the Wachau region. This cycle tour is a true classic and is ideally suited as a first cycling holiday with the whole family.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 5-day tour from Passau/Schärding to Vienna

It is recommended to arrive early because Passau has much to offer. The well-known cathedral houses the world´s biggest church organ. In the evening: personal welcome briefing and handover of the bikes (if booked).

First, you will follow the river Inn to Passau where it joins the Danube and then you will cycle along the Danube towards Engelhartszell. Do not miss the opportunity to visit Engelhartszell abbey with its own liquor production.

On your way to Linz you will come across the unique natural phenomenon - the “Schlögener Schlinge (river bend)”, where the Danube has been forced to make a 180° degrees turn. Once you have reached the European culture capital 2009, you can enjoy the lively historic old town, the scenic views of Linz from the Pöstlingberg or simply take a walk along the Danube.

You will leave Linz and cycle towards Strudengau and Nibelungengau. You will cycle past the Celtic village Mitterkirchen and just before the border between Upper and Lower Austria you will see the baroque town of Grein with Austria’s oldest city theatre and Greinburg castle.

Then you will continue your journey to Maria Taferl and Melk. Here you should stop briefly and look up – otherwise you may miss out on seeing the beautiful Melk abbey, which towers above the Danube.

Today, you will leave Melk and cycle into the landscape of the Wachau region where you will be enchanted by the atmosphere of the typical fruit orchards and vineyards.

Today, we will organise wine tasting for you, which is a must-do during a visit to the Wachau region. Refreshed, you will cycle past the wine towns of Spitz and Weißenkirchen as well as the ruins of Dürnstein castle.

During the last kilometres of your bike tour you will cycle via the 1,000-year-old town of Krems and the Roman town of Tulln to the Danube metropolis of Vienna.

If you are interested in, we would be pleased to book some extra nights for you.

Level

Athletic cyclist

Daily stage lengths of more than 80 kilometres don’t worry you, and hilly stretches with some tough climbs are a must. You spend a lot of time on the bike so you’re fit and have plenty of stamina. You have a need for speed, so it’s got to be a sports bike, gravel bike or road bike for you.

Topography

The topography is flat throughout, but the length of the stages requires a good basic level of fitness.

Road conditions

The route runs almost exclusively on well-maintained bike paths.

Route-finding & navigation

You will navigate by yourself using maps and/or GPS data. The route is also very well signposted.

Fancy some extra power?

On this sporty cycling tour, an e-bike can give you an extra tempo boost!

Sporty tour + e-bike = more momentum and energy

You think adventure, calf workouts and e-bikes are mutually exclusive? Far from it, we say! Cycling with electric power can open up whole new worlds of cycling.

Concept

For cycling holiday connoisseurs who already appreciate the advantages of e-bikes and who would like to cover longer distances at a brisk pace, the combination of an e-bike & a sporty cycling tour offers a new adventure in the form of longer distances and more challenging terrain.

Even those who are not (yet) fit enough but are still craving a sporty PEDALO bike tour should go for it - and treat themselves to an e-bike for support. With a gentle push, it gets you right into the thick of it all!

Or are you travelling as a couple and your partner is always ahead of you? With an e-bike, you will be able to keep up easily.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
