South Sardinia Grand Tour

A fantastic loop of South Sardinia with a good balance of inland and coastal routes. Despite being a road cycling trip, we kept daily distance and climb within any keen cyclist reach. It is one of the easiest trips in our road cycling section.

The itinerary

For your 8-day tour from Cagliari to Pula

Day
01
Arrival in Cagliari (organised by the traveller)

You start on a high riding along the Poetto, the Cagliari 10km white sandy beach, very dear to the locals. Then tackle the amazing coastal road to Villasimius. This scenic road was included in the 2007 and 2017 Giro D’Italia routes. Come and witness why, with your eyes and legs.

Leave the coast and start exploring inland Sardinia. After climbing the hills of Gerrei, head towards the Lake Mulargia and finish your cycling day in Orroli, the centenarians’ village. Orroli is a Blue Zone, a place where people leave much longer than average. You’ll find out why with a healthy food dinner!

Keep riding off the beaten path on the rolling hills Marmilla, where the Giara Plateau lays. Great scenic roads with no traffic will lead you to a part of Sardinia rich in history. At “Su Nuraxi” in Barumini, the Nuragic Civilization reached the apex of its development. Su Nuraxi is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Back to the coast! Ride west and cross the fields of Campidano. Enjoy a spectacular 7 kms long descent before reaching the golden beach of Portixeddu. End your day in the small village of Buggerru, formerly an important mining town. The mines have been dismissed many years ago, however plenty of remains are still visible.

Leave Buggerru heading South along a dramatic coastline. Beautifully surrounded by Mediterranean bush, is the village of Nebida, where you can admire the looming mass of Pan di Zucchero cliff and the old Lamarmora ore washery. Nestled in the Mediterranean bush, it looks out over the sea at the end of a long descent down 540 steps. Then go island hopping to Carloforte, where locals still fish the Red Tuna fish, and Sant’Antioco. Overnight in Sant’Antioco village centre, where you can enjoy the local lively lifestyle.

Final catwalk of your tour is the beautiful Costa del Sud with its gleaming white beaches, unspoilt natural landscape and imposing cliffs. This coastal road, a 20 km sequence of short climbs and exciting descents, is without a doubt one of the best cycling roads all over Sardinia. At Nora, explore the ancient Phoenician settlement, before celebrating the end of this fantastic trip with a cold Ichnusa beer in Pula.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
