Your journey begins in Bamberg, in the heart of “Bierfranken” Franconia of the beers. The river leisurely makes its way through the Franconian wine country and slowly meanders through the dark green forests of the Spessart region behind Würzburg. The river is always accompanied by the formidable Main Cycle Path – one of the most beautiful river cycle paths in Germany. Castles, fortresses and ornately decorated churches, as well as cosy beer gardens and rustic wine taverns, bear witness to the rich cultural history of many places.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 8-day tour from Bamberg to Aschaffenburg

The medieval original town ensemble has been an UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993. One of the most important of the countless sites isthe cathedral: Belonging to the principal German imperial cathedrals, it was sanctified in 1237 and accommodates the imperial grave of Heinrich II.

You will be cycling through the valley, following the Main. Today’s stage will leisurly take you through wine villages and orchards along the river. Later, you will cycle through Haßfurt and finally reach Schhweinfurt in Lower Franconia, with its beautiful Holy Trinity church.

In the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten, which was built in the 15th century, you will find the famous floating Madonna in the Rosary by Riemenschneider. Volkach is the centre of the Maindreieck wine region. The Main continues meandering along the valley towards Kitzingen, which is famous as it boasts the oldest wine cellar in Germany.

The river and along with it the Main cycle path, makes a dramatic turn and lead you towards the Franconian metropolis of Würzburg. You shouldn‘t miss the Baroque Castle here and the World Heritage Site of the Würzburger Residenz Palace, which towers high above the town. Also worth to look at are the Old Bridge and the traiditional vineyards within the city. The way onwards to Zellingen and Karlstadt takes you along nice and easy paths.

The Main triangle is now followed by the Main quadrangle, the first corner of which is Gemünden. Here you are already in the Spessart nature park, which you can overlook wonderfully from the ruins of Scherenburg. The route then continues in ever tighter curves through wooded hills. Near Rothenfels, the Romanesque castle watches over the narrow valley and your path; Marktheidenfeld, situated between the Main and Spessart rivers, is entirely under the sign of Franconian wine culture.

Behind the next bend of the river, the view falls on Stadtprozelten, where one of the most beautiful castle ruins of the Main is enthroned above the city, the Henneburg. With Freudenberg you reach a recognized recreational resort, which, in addition to Kneipp facilities, a bathing lake and the historic town centre, also has a castle ruin from the late 12th century to offer.

In Miltenberg, the „Schnatterloch“, one of the most picturesque German squares and world-famous photo motif, and the „Riesen“ inn are particularly famous. Next you head for the small town of Klingenberg and its vineyards, wine cellars and so-called „Heckenwirtschaften“ - wine taverns that open seasonally. The „glide“ along the Main cycle path to the „Spessart Metropolis“, Aschaffenburg. From afar already, the four towers marking each corner of Johannisburg Castle show you the way. Impressive historical buildings bear witness to the historical importance of Aschaffenburg.

After breakfast you start your individual return journey home or extend your stay.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!
