The itinerary
at a glance

For your 11-day tour from Magdeburg to Cuxhaven

In the late afternoon, the bikes will be handed out and you will receive important information from our tour guide. Afterwards you will have the opportunity to stroll through the beautiful former imperial city.

On quiet paths through the Jerichower Land, the first stage leads to the small town of Burg, also called the city of towers. The historic old town presents itself with many attractive monuments.

Your journey takes you through small villages along the way with a detour to the Romanesque monastery church of Jerichow to Tangermünde. The town has preserved its medieval townscape to the present day. The medieval castle and the town, which was built under its protection about 800 years ago, are situated on a plateau above the distinctive floodplain landscape and the mouth of the small river Tangier into the Elbe.

The "Old Elbe" nature reserve offers a relaxing start to today's cycling day. The ride takes you past Storkau Castle to Havelberg, the "island and cathedral town in the countryside". Small, almost inconspicuous, it lies at the confluence of the Havel and Elbe rivers. The cathedral, built in Renaissance and Baroque style, and the pretty old town are certainly worth seeing.

Today you cycle on a peaceful stage through the glacial valley of the Elbe to the small town of Wittenberge with its unmistakable panorama and the second largest tower clock in Europe. You continue into the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Elbe-Brandenburg, through one of the most fascinating river landscapes in Germany, to Schnackenburg with its famous Borderland Museum. Overnight stay in the area of Gartow am See.

Today you follow the romantic meanders of the Elbe to the city of Hitzacker. The town lies on the “German Half-Timbered House Road” and has a picturesque old town with North German brick architecture.

The stage to Lauenburg is somewhat hilly. The old town silhouette framed by the banks of the Elbe is characteristic of the town. The castle with its mighty castle tower and the steeple of the Maria Magdalenen Church dominate the cityscape. The Fürstengarten (prince's garden) is very charming and the view of the nature reserves on the banks of the Elbe and far into the country to Lüneburg is magnificent.

Convenient cycle paths lead along the Elbe via Geesthacht to the great harbour and cosmopolitan city of Hamburg with its numerous architectural monuments, great art and culture as well as a unique atmosphere.

You cycle along the Elbe Bike Path towards Glückstadt on an almost car-free route. On the way, you will pass Wedel with its ship welcoming system: every large ship that’s arriving or departing is solemnly greeted with it’s corresponding national anthem. You will then reach Glückstadt: historic houses and noble mansions characterise the almost completely preserved old town.

The Elbe ferry (price not included) takes you across the river. You cycle through the district of Cuxhaven called "Cuxland", where traditional seaside resorts still attract numerous guests to the North Sea coast. Heath and marshland also make the land behind the dikes an experience. After your approximately 58-kilometre drive, you will reach Cuxhaven.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension in Cuxhaven.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
