The whole of East Frisia is characterised by the sea. Braised eel and prawns are among the delicacies here. The formerly rich harbour towns still have a maritime flair today and even in the hinterland the air sometimes tastes pleasantly salty. You start your journey in Oldenburg, which can also take you to the island of Norderney if you wish, and into a landscape that offers far more than just East Frisian clichés. However, it is true that East Frisian tea is a delicacy.

The itinerary
at a glance

For your 8-day round trip in the Oldenburg area

Use the evening for a stroll through the charming old town and the castle gardens.

The first stage takes you through the Ammerland parkland to the spa town of Bad Zwischenahn. Savour the well-known delicacy: Smoortaal - freshly caught smoked eel ‘Ammerland style’. The garden park of the climatic health resort combines garden styles from all over the world.

The route leads through secluded fen settlements to Aurich, where the East Frisian chieftains and counts ruled for centuries. Then follow the Ems-Jade Canal to Emden. The seaport city was one of the richest port cities in Europe, but never a member of the Hanseatic League. Afterwards you have the opportunity to stroll through the town or visit one of the three museum ships in the harbour.

Crab fishing characterises Greetsiel like no other East Frisian village. You shouldn't miss out on a portion of fresh crab in this picturesque fishing village. Pass the Leybucht bay - where you may be lucky enough to spot seals - on your way to Norden, the oldest town in East Frisia with the state-recognised North Sea spa resort of Norddeich.

The crossing takes about an hour from Norddeich to the island, which you can discover wonderfully by bike (ferry incl. bike and visitor's tax not included in the price). Alternatively, you can take a cycle tour along the North Sea coast or visit the seal station in Norddeich.

Via Dornum to the most beautiful moated castle in East Frisia and on through the marshland to the former East Frisian chieftain town of Esens, you reach Wittmund. Look forward to charming brick architecture, two gallery Dutch mills and the East Frisian way of life.

From Wittmund to medieval Jever and on to Gödens Castle. Dangast is the oldest North Sea resort on the coast of Lower Saxony and a popular attraction not only for art lovers.

Winding paths lead to the Jaderberg animal and leisure park, one of the largest in northern Germany with over 600 animals. Past Rastede, the former summer residence of the Oldenburg counts and dukes, back to the starting point in Oldenburg.

Individual return journey or start of your extension.

Your travel documents usually include general travel information, a hotel list, a road book and/or detailed maps as well as a textual description of the route; you will also get luggage tags and possibly also vouchers and/or information material on the various sightseeing attractions. The exact contents of the information package depend on the booked trip and its included services.

The documents will be sent to you approx. two to three weeks before the start of your tour. Depending on the trip, you may receive them partly in digital form and partly by post – or you will receive the hotel list and general travel information in advance by e-mail, and the remaining documents along with the maps on site at your starting hotel.

Please note that the travel documents are issued exclusively for PEDALO guests and are therefore not available without a booking.

The transport of your luggage from hotel to hotel is included as part of the basic service package for all staged tours and round trips in the PEDALO programme. You simply leave your luggage out for our courier in the morning before you set off on your cycling stage. When you arrive at your next accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening, it will be there waiting for you.

Just in case, we recommend always packing a change of clothes in your saddle bag, especially for short stages which you may cover more quickly than the luggage driver.

Depending on how the logistics are organised on site, there may be restrictions on the maximum weight and/or number of pieces of luggage. You will receive more detailed information on this with the travel documents well before the start of your trip.

Travel insurance is not included in our prices. You can decide whether to get a quote elsewhere or simply book your travel insurance online at pedalo.com/en/service/travel-insurance. In any case, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance!

Please note that for last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before the start of the trip), insurance cover can only be taken out within 3 days of booking.
